RED LIGHT THERAPY… FOR YOUR SCALP?

Red light therapy (RLT) has been across socials, taking the beauty world by storm. RLT masks have quickly become the holy grail to great skin, and we’ve seen people adding them into their beauty routine with the promise of reducing redness & wrinkles and improving the appearance of acne and skin texture. It seems like the perfect addition to any skin ritual, but what about if we add it into our hair care as well?

The benefits of RLT for the scalp are pretty amazing. It can help prevent hair loss and encourage new growth by stimulating the hair follicles and increasing blood circulation into the scalp. This then stops the follicles from becoming dormant and closing up, encouraging new growth instead. RLT is also known to improve the appearance of the scalp while reducing the amount of sebum being produced. Sebum is essentially the scalp's natural oil that helps maintain healthy skin and hair; however, if your body produces too much, it can result in oily hair, clogged follicles, and dandruff. The other key benefit from RLT is a soothing anti-inflammatory effect, so if you suffer with a sensitive scalp, it should really be your best friend.

We put a few to the test and found our favourite to be the Luminesce 3-in-1 scalp & hair growth therapy brush. This nifty little tool is easy to use and comfortable on the scalp. The best way to see results is to use it once a day for around 5 minutes, working on problem spots and throughout the scalp. We basically broke it down as:

  • Encouraging new hair growth

  • Thickening/looking after the hair we already have

  • Improving scalp appearance

  • Soothing scalp irritation

  • Reducing oiliness (which means your blowdry will last longer… eek!)

So really, if you buy one and use it every day, the money you’ll save from all the benefits means it’s basically free, right?

What is Red Light Therapy?

RLT works by using low levels of heat to stimulate cells to repair themselves. Light penetrates the skin and stimulates enzymes, creating a biochemical reaction in the body, increasing activity, and producing faster levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the main energy molecule of the cells, which helps transport energy to your tissue.  Listen, we don’t want this to be a science lesson, but we wanted to just let you know what's happening and why it works.
