HAIR HIGHLIGHTS: IZZY UTTERSON
Izzy Utterson (@izzyutterson) is the perfect way to start 2025 on the Loxx. Her positivity posts including lessons she has learnt, how to glow up and ways to improve your wellness have lead to a huge following across her socials and a podcast called ‘Lessons nobody wants to learn'. We sat with Izzy to discuss how her hair makes her feel, why it plays an important role in her life and her constant battle of ‘should I grow it longer or chop it off..’
“I think we see our hair as a bit of a burden like ‘uh I have to wash my hair tonight, where as if you can see it as a self care step and put more of an effort into it, it just makes everything feel better.”
On her hair journey…
As you know I’m on a big self care/glow up journey, hair was the last part of that but actually I think it was the most important. Skin care, I know what to do. Make up, I know what to do but when it came to hair it really took a back seat. If your hair looks good and it’s glossy, shiny & soft, you just feel put together. I can have no make up on, yet if I’ve had a fresh blow-dry then I feel 10/10. It makes your outfit look more expensive, makes you look more expensive, you just feel good. Recently I’ve put a lot into my hair because for so long I’d think ‘what’s missing from this picture, why don’t I like it of me? I’d realise it was my hair noT quite working for me.
I think we see our hair as a bit of a burden like ‘uh I have to wash my hair tonight, where as if you can see it as a self care step and put more of an effort into it, it just makes everything feel better. I wash my hair every 7-9 days and I’ve started habit stacking with my routine. For example if I’m doing a slick back I’ll use really lovely oils or masks instead of heavy duty spray and gels, I’m working out ways to keep giving my hair that nourishment and focus in everyday life.
On where she gets her hair done…
I go to Hershesons for my haircut and colour. I see Hannah for colour (@colourwithhann) and Connor (@conor_hair) for my cut and styling. I am obsessed with Connor. I’m a bit of a slut when it comes to hairstylists, and I’ve never been that loyal to one, but now I am like, okay, I’ve found my people; these are my guys. I like someone who’s really passionate about hair, and I want someone who knows so much about their craft that I can ask all about anything, and they can help me and recommend services and products that will genuinely improve the hair on my head. I also like someone who is funny and easygoing; it's like a relationship, isn’t it? You want to form something where someone knows you, knows what you like, and knows your hair. Honesty is the key—Conor will tell me when something isn’t working, and that’s what I look for with my stylist.
On her hair icons…
Sienna Miller is my ultimate hair icon. Her hair is just the ultimate inspiration for everything, right? But I also love Matilda Djerf, Hailey Bieber, and Elsa Hosk. I’m also really into the 90’s blowout look with volume and layers; it's such a hot moment. Now I have the money to invest in my hair and look after it, I am fully going for the hair looks. I want a blow-dry once a week, I want rollers. I am fully committing to my hair looks. There is also nothing sexier to me than a 3-day-old blow-dry in a claw clip in my opinion.
On what her hair means to her…
Hair, interestingly enough, is the most important part if I’m giving a talk or on a podcast being filmed. I'm not that bothered about skin or makeup, but if my hair isn’t looking right, then I feel self-conscious. Now I’m 27, people always say to me, ‘Take care of your hair and your teeth; they are something that shows your age.’. I put it like this to myself: you wouldn’t go for a facial then not maintain the results with regular skin care at home. You wouldn’t go to the dentist and not brush your teeth in-between visits. Doing the oils and investing in good haircare that works for your hair type is the key here. Haircuts and colours can be seen as a treat, but adding to your hair routine every day is what will give you the best results. I truly think taking care is the key to good hair.
On hair products…
I was using shit products for so long when I was young. Now I highlight my hair, and there is more of a need to look after it, and I wish someone had told me that sooner. When I first started having it bleached, I was going to cheap salons and not looking after it properly, and you can see the difference in it then compared to now. I would often think, Does good shampoo actually work? Do the masks actually work? Now I’ve used them, I really think they do; I just don’t think they get enough airtime! We all have such different hair, so it’s varied, and it’s hard to know what to pick, but if you can see someone recommending something and they truly believe in it, then that’s a good place to start. I always remember someone saying to me that not using a leave-in conditioner on your hair is like not putting moisturiser on your face, and that made me look at hair products totally differently.
Living proof dry shampoo is my ride or die. I think dry shampoo is a horrible product; it's like talc, and it sits on your hair and makes it tacky—it almost creates its own layer on your head. However, when I first discovered Living Proof, I realised that was a game changer. I will get a blow-dry, and it will last a whole week because of that product, it just feels so light and unnoticeable in the hair. I also love Fable and Mane hair oils. They are unreal; they sent me a bunch of stuff, and I used it and was like, Whoa, this actually works. They are my go-to when I’m doing a slick look but still want to hydrate and nourish my hair. I have psoriasis on my scalp, and this is the tip of all tips. Aveda Shampure is the ultimate shampoo. If you have dandruff, psoriasis, eczema, or dermatitis, if you use shampoo on your scalp for a month… gone. Everyone I recommend it to has seen their scalp clear up. I cannot recommend it enough. My mum bought it for me back in 2019, and I have never looked back.
I’m in a chapter now where I treat my hair routine as self-care. It's just as important as skincare or diet, and that extra time spent blow-drying and caring for it has made me feel better in day-to-day life. I want to have fun with my hair and try new things. I love a ponytail, a bob, a blowout—I’m in this cycle of growing it out long then cutting it all off. I’m excited to enter my bombshell blowout era…
